Development of structure- and surface-optimized silicon anodes and high-energy cathodes for energy-dense lithium-ion batteries for stationary energy storage solutions
The consortium in the “StrOboBatt” project is dedicated to the development of structure- and surface-optimized silicon anodes and high-energy cathodes for energy-dense lithium-ion batteries for stationary energy storage.
The overall aim of the “StrOboBatt” project is to significantly increase the energy density of silicon-based anode and LF(M)P-based cathode active materials in lithium-ion batteries by innovative particle coating technologies while cutting battery cell production costs by reducing energy consumption, particularly in electrode and cell production. At the same time, the elimination of critical raw materials in battery production (nickel, cobalt, graphite) can reduce dependencies on Asian countries.
In order to achieve these goals, various approaches are being investigated, including:
- Increasing the energy density of the anode materials by using a higher silicon content with simultaneous coating to buffer volume expansion and optimization of the binder system
- Increasing the energy density and hydrophobization of the LF(M)P-based cathode materials through additional coatings (oxidic, polymer)
- By coating with hydrophobic substances, the battery electrodes can subsequently be produced with water as a solvent and the battery cells can then be manufactured with a reduced dew point (reduction of energy consumption and toxic solvents in electrode and cell production)
The work packages taken over by Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH deal on the one hand with the technical improvement of a lab-scale powder synthesis plant (development of novel quench and filter concepts) and on the other hand with the production and functionalization of LF(M)P-based cathode active materials.
